Why a Valid Job Offer Still Matters for Eligibility Even Though It Earns Zero CRS Points
Twenty-five March 2025 is the date to remember here. That’s when IRCC removed the Comprehensive Ranking System bonus for arranged employment — 200 points for a senior-management job offer, 50 points for anything else. It applied instantly, to candidates already in the pool as well as new arrivals, and it hasn’t been reversed since.
What that date did not do is delete the job offer from the Express Entry system entirely. This is where job offer eligibility without CRS points gets genuinely confusing for people scanning old guides: a job offer can still matter, just in a different way than most articles assume.
Two separate jobs a job offer can do
Think of a job offer as doing one of two possible jobs in your application, and only one of them still pays out — the eligibility versus scoring value of a Canadian job offer is the whole distinction in one phrase.
Scoring value: points added to your CRS total. This is gone, full stop, since 25 March 2025, regardless of the offer’s seniority or salary.
Eligibility value: whether you qualify for a programme at all. This still exists in specific places. Under proof-of-funds rules, for example, a candidate who is authorised to work in Canada and holds a valid job offer is exempt from showing settlement funds — even when applying under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades programmes, both of which normally require proof of funds from everyone else. That’s a real, practical benefit that has nothing to do with the CRS scoreboard.
The federal skilled trades wrinkle
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is the clearest case of eligibility mattering independently of scoring. Historically, FSTP eligibility could be satisfied through either a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification in the trade — the job offer route sat at the eligibility gate, not the points table. Even where reform proposals discuss dropping this requirement in future, it illustrates the underlying principle: a programme’s entry rules and its ranking formula are two different documents, and job-offer status can matter to one without touching the other.
Where this actually changes your paperwork
If IRCC finds you eligible under more than one programme and you turn out to be exempt from proof of funds because of a job offer plus work authorisation, you still need to upload a letter explaining that exemption rather than simply skipping the section. Silence isn’t the same as an exemption on file.
What to take from this
If a Canadian employer ever does put a genuine offer in front of you, don’t dismiss it just because it won’t move your CRS number — check what else it might unlock on the eligibility side before deciding it’s worthless. And don’t let anyone tell you a job offer is scoring points again; it isn’t, not unless IRCC amends the rules through a formal Ministerial Instruction, and that hasn’t happened.
