The Physicians Category, Explained: Why Canadian Work Experience Qualifies You
Canada created an entire Express Entry category just for doctors who’d already worked here, and its first-ever round posted the lowest CRS cut-off since the pandemic. Where the category came from
The category was announced on 8 December 2025 as part of a package titled “Targeted immigration measures to boost Canada’s supply of doctors.” Alongside the new Express Entry category, the same package gave provinces extra federal nomination spaces specifically for doctors with job offers, and set a 14-day work permit processing standard for nominated doctors — a clear signal that the whole package, not just this one category, was built to address a physician shortage directly.
Who Qualifies for the Physicians Category
The eligibility bar is specific and, unlike several other categories, not flexible on where the experience was gained: candidates need at least one year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the previous three years, and that experience has to have been earned in Canada — experience gained abroad doesn’t count toward this category at all. The eligible occupations are narrow: general practitioners and family physicians, specialists in surgery, and specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine. A doctor in a different specialty, or one whose relevant year of practice happened outside Canada, doesn’t qualify under this category no matter how strong the rest of their profile is.
The Canadian Experience Requirement Physicians Category Shares With Two Other 2026 Categories
This category isn’t unique in requiring Canadian-only experience — Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience and Researchers with Canadian Work Experience, both also new for 2026, apply the identical “in Canada only” restriction. All three sit apart from categories like healthcare and social services or trades, which accept experience gained in Canada or abroad. For an offshore candidate with no Canadian work history at all, this category — like its two 2026 siblings — is closed regardless of how the rest of the profile looks.
Physicians Category Express Entry 2026 — the Draw Record So Far
The first round ran on 19 February 2026: 391 invitations at a CRS cut-off of 169, the lowest cut-off recorded since the pandemic era. A second round followed on 24 June 2026, issuing 271 invitations at a cut-off of 223 — still very low relative to Canadian Experience Class cut-offs sitting in the 500s over the same period, but noticeably higher than the first round. Two rounds is not yet enough to call a stable pattern, but the direction between them is upward, not flat.
How it differs from the general healthcare category
Healthcare and social services is a much broader category — 37 occupations, with experience countable whether it was gained in Canada or abroad. Physicians with Canadian work experience is the opposite in both respects: three occupations only, and Canadian-only experience. A foreign-trained specialist practising entirely outside Canada might fit comfortably inside the healthcare and social services occupation list while being completely ineligible for the physicians category — the two aren’t interchangeable routes to the same outcome, despite covering overlapping medical professions.
