A Record-Low CRS Score: How the Physicians Category Rewards Canadian Experience
On 19 February 2026, Express Entry invited 391 candidates at a Comprehensive Ranking System score of just 169 — the lowest cut-off ever recorded in the program’s history, and roughly half of what a strong offshore profile usually needs. That single number is the headline fact about the physicians with canadian experience category, and it’s worth working through the checklist of what actually produced it, because the reason isn’t that doctors suddenly became easy to select.
What the category is
Announced on 8 December 2025 in a news release titled “Targeted immigration measures to boost Canada’s supply of doctors,” this category was created specifically to fast-track physicians already working in Canada toward permanent residence.
Which occupations it covers
Three, and only three: general practitioners and family physicians, specialists in surgery, and specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine. There’s no broader “healthcare worker” sweep here — this sits entirely separate from the much larger healthcare and social services category, which covers 37 occupations.
Where the experience has to come from
At least one year of Canadian work experience in one of those three occupations, gained within the previous three years. Experience earned practising medicine anywhere outside Canada doesn’t count toward this category, even for a fully qualified specialist.
Why the cut-off fell so low
Express entry physicians category cut off numbers tell the real story: the first round, on 19 February 2026, cleared at CRS 169. The second, on 24 June 2026, cleared at 223 — still extraordinarily low by Express Entry standards, even though it climbed from the first round. A cut-off that low simply means very few candidates in the entire pool met the strict eligibility bar of Canadian-only physician experience, so IRCC could reach deep into the pool without needing a high score to fill the round.
What “lowest crs score express entry ever” actually means
It doesn’t mean doctors face an easier bar to qualify — the eligibility rule (Canadian experience, specific occupation) is narrow and strict. It means that once you clear that narrow bar, your ranking against other candidates barely matters, because so few people can clear it at all.
What came with the announcement
The December 2025 package also gave provinces extra federal nomination spaces specifically for doctors with a job offer, and set a 14-day work permit processing standard for nominated doctors — both aimed at the same goal of getting Canadian-experienced physicians through the system faster.
Who this actually helps
A doctor express entry canadian experience category candidate has to already be working in Canada in one of the three listed roles. It offers nothing to a South African-trained GP or specialist still practising at home, however strong their credentials — that’s the same closed-to-offshore pattern running through all three of the new 2026 “with Canadian experience” categories.
Whether your own medical registration, licensing status and work history would actually meet this category’s requirements is a question for a licensed RCIC or immigration lawyer to walk through directly — provincial medical licensing runs on its own separate track from anything described here, and getting that sequencing wrong can cost real time.
