Two systems, one accredited degree apart
In South Africa, ECSA registers you as a professional engineer once, nationally. In Canada, licensing is provincial: Ontario has PEO, Alberta has APEGA, British Columbia has EGBC and eight more provinces and territories run their own regulator besides. There is no single Canadian equivalent to ECSA — you licence with whichever province you’ll actually work in.
Both ECSA and Engineers Canada are full signatories to the Washington Accord, which is the genuinely good part of this comparison: your engineering degree, if it was ECSA-accredited, is generally accepted as meeting the academic requirement without additional exams. The commonly cited year ECSA joined is 1999 — worth confirming directly if your degree dates from close to that line, since the Accord only covers programmes accredited during the period of membership.
What the Accord does not do is recognise your Pr.Eng title itself, and there is no separate mutual recognition agreement between Engineers Canada and ECSA the way there is with a handful of other countries. Your registration counts for nothing on the Canadian side; your experience gets assessed on its own merits regardless of how senior you were at home.
What actually stands between you and a licence
Every province asks for broadly the same four things: an accepted academic credential, 48 months of documented engineering experience assessed through a Competency-Based Assessment, a National Professional Practice Examination covering Canadian engineering law and ethics, and proof of good character and language proficiency.
You work while you clear that bar. Register as an Engineer-in-Training under a licensed P.Eng, and the 48 months accumulate on the job — you just can’t use the P.Eng title, take formal professional responsibility, or seal drawings until you’re through. If your South African experience is already substantial, provinces are increasingly willing to count it: several regulators have been actively dismantling the old requirement for a chunk of that experience to be specifically Canadian, treating it instead as a set of Canadian-context competencies to demonstrate rather than years to re-serve. Confirm the current position with the specific provincial regulator, since this has been changing quickly.
Roughly: if your 48 months are already banked from South African site investigation and design work, licensing review plus the practice exam can run 6 to 12 months. Starting fresh from graduation, budget closer to four and a half years. Costs vary by province — expect a few hundred dollars for the application itself, plus a credential assessment and exam fees on top.
