Many South African workplaces shut almost completely between mid-December and mid-January, so it’s a natural assumption that a national immigration system might do something similar. Rounds ran on 2, 3 and 16 December 2024 (Provincial Nominee Program and French-language rounds), then paused. The next round didn’t land until 7 January 2025 — about three weeks, starting mid-month rather than at the very end of it.
2025: draws again ran deep into December
Five rounds landed between 8 and 17 December 2025 — Provincial Nominee Program, Canadian Experience Class, healthcare and social services, and French-language rounds — then a pause until 5 January 2026, roughly two and a half weeks.
So does the pool pause over Christmas?
Sometimes, briefly, and sometimes not really at all. Three of the last four holiday periods in the record show IRCC running rounds within days of Christmas itself and resuming again in the first week or two of January — closer to a short administrative gap than an actual shutdown. Only the very first holiday period after all-program draws resumed, in 2022, produced anything like a full seven-week lull.
What this means if you’re watching the calendar in December
Don’t assume silence in the second half of December is unusual — some years it barely happens at all, and even in the quieter years the gap has run two to three and a half weeks, not the multi-month stretch a full “office closed for the holidays” comparison might suggest.
