How many of the days you’ve spent in Canada actually count toward citizenship? Most PRs can’t answer that on the spot, and the honest answer depends on more than just how long your PR card has been in your wallet.

Here’s the honest picture: Canadian citizenship eligibility rules for permanent residents rest on a handful of separate conditions, and all of them have to be true at once — reading the eligibility rules before counting days will save you a wasted year.

The days themselves

You need 1,095 days — three years — of physical presence in Canada, counted within the five years immediately before you apply. A full day as a PR counts as one day. A day spent in Canada before you became a PR, as a student or worker with valid status, counts as half a day, capped at a maximum of 365 days of credit from that pre-PR period.

That cap matters. Two years studying in Canada before landing as a PR converts into a full year toward citizenship — a genuine advantage of the study-permit-first route. It stops at 365 days of credit no matter how long you were here before PR.

At least 730 of the 1,095 days must have been spent as a PR specifically. Pre-landing credit alone cannot get you there.

The language bar is lower than you’d expect

If you’re between 18 and 54 at the time you sign your application, you need CLB or NCLC 4 in speaking and listening, in English or French. That’s a modest level, well below the CLB 7 that Express Entry’s Federal Skilled Worker stream demanded to get you here. Anyone who came through Express Entry usually cleared this bar years earlier without noticing. Applicants 55 and over, and those under 18, are exempt from the language requirement entirely.

The knowledge test

Also for the 18–54 group: 20 multiple-choice or true/false questions, drawn from the study guide Discover Canada, covering rights, history, government and symbols. You need 15 out of 20 to pass, you get 45 minutes, and you get three attempts. It can be sat online or in person, and some applicants are offered a video-call option.

The parts people forget

Taxes matter. You may need to have filed income tax returns for at least three of the five years in the eligibility window, if you were required to file at all — worth checking with a Canadian accountant if your filing history has gaps. Criminal or security prohibitions can bar approval regardless of how solid your presence record is.

Putting it all together

Run through any citizenship requirements checklist for PRs and you’ll find the same pattern: enough days but no tax filings, enough days but a language gap in the wrong age band, a clean record but presence short by a few months. Any single gap holds the file up; none of these conditions substitutes for another. The physical-presence count is worth tracking properly from the day you land, ideally with IRCC’s own travel journal tool, because it’s also what you’ll need to prove for a PR card renewal or a travel document if you’re outside Canada without one.
