The Five Language Tests Express Entry Accepts, and the Two Versions That Do Not Count
A friend books “IELTS” for her Express Entry file, sits it, gets a strong band score, and only later discovers she booked the wrong module. It’s one of the most common and most expensive mistakes South Africans make with their files, and the list of language tests Express Entry accepts and rejects is shorter and stricter than most people assume.
The five that count
Only five tests are accepted, split by language:
- CELPIP-General (English)
- IELTS General Training (English)
- PTE Core (English)
- TEF Canada (French)
- TCF Canada (French)
That’s the entire list. Nothing else — however similar the name sounds — earns you a Comprehensive Ranking System score.
The two traps hiding inside that list
Here’s where people lose money and months. The first trap is booking IELTS Academic instead of IELTS General Training. They share a name, a test centre, and half a syllabus, but only the General Training version counts here — Academic is built for university admissions, and ielts academic not accepted express entry is a lesson many candidates learn only after paying for the wrong module. The second trap is the IELTS One Skill Retake, a newer product that lets you redo a single band without resitting the whole test. Even a correctly booked test has a shelf life. Results must be less than two years old at two separate moments: when you complete your Express Entry profile, and again when you submit your permanent residence application if you’re invited. A test sat early in your planning can quietly expire while you’re still waiting in the pool.
Match the test to the minimum you actually need
The programme you’re aiming for sets the floor. Federal Skilled Worker asks for CLB 7 in all four abilities. Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing. Canadian Experience Class splits by occupation level — CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 roles, CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3. Booking the right test only helps if you also know which bar you’re clearing.

Confirm, on the test provider’s own booking page, that you have selected: CELPIP-General (not the LS variant), IELTS General Training (not Academic, and not a One Skill Retake), or PTE Core (not PTE Academic).
