If you moved to Perth or London, would you even need to look for South Africans, or would they find you first? It’s a fair question, because South African community networks by Canadian city look different here from the way they do in Australia or the UK — and knowing that difference before you land changes how much effort you should expect to put in.

Canada is the smallest of the “big five” South African emigration destinations. The 2021 Census recorded roughly 51,590 South Africa-born residents in Canada, against 224,160 in Australia, 217,180 in the UK and 123,461 in the US — figures reported via BusinessTech’s reading of StatCan data, not independently re-verified here, so treat the exact numbers as indicative rather than precise. The practical consequence is real either way: thinner community infrastructure, fewer established SA employers, but also less competition for the jobs South Africans tend to go for.

Before you land: where the numbers actually point

That same 2021 snapshot breaks the diaspora down by city: Toronto around 13,165, Vancouver about 9,005, Calgary roughly 3,590, Edmonton around 2,595, Hamilton about 1,590, Ottawa roughly 1,335, Victoria around 1,245, and Montreal and Kelowna each near 770. If finding other South Africans matters to you, that ordering is worth knowing before you pick a city for other reasons — a stated size rather than a promise of an active social scene once you’re there.

Newer numbers add a wrinkle worth planning around. Express Entry admissions of South African citizens between 2023 and 2025 ran roughly 825 to Ontario, 670 to British Columbia and 285 to Alberta — but 2025 alone flipped that order: BC took 180, Ontario 155, Alberta 65. British Columbia overtook Ontario as the leading destination for new South African arrivals in the most recent full year on record. A city’s historical SA population and its current inflow aren’t the same thing, and the second one tells you more about who you’ll actually meet.

The first year, roughly

Before departure: whatever online groups you find will be the loudest signal you have, and loud isn’t the same as trustworthy. Community Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats are genuinely useful for finding saffa groups after you land, but avoiding scams inside community groups takes real vigilance — fake rental listings, “guaranteed” job offers, paid “consultants” operating without any license to give immigration advice. Treat unsolicited certainty from a stranger in a group the same way you would at home.

First few months: community forms slower than the group-chat activity suggests. People are working, settling kids into school, learning a new city — the same things you’re doing. Attendance at any in-person meetup tends to be a fraction of a group’s online membership.

Six months to a year: this is usually when it either clicks or it doesn’t, and both outcomes are normal. Some South Africans build a tight local circle; others find their closest friendships end up being Canadian, or from some other diaspora entirely, and the SA connection stays online and occasional.

What this doesn’t tell you

Nothing here says whether a faith community, a school gate, or a rugby or netball club will be where you actually meet people — those channels matter enormously in practice, but this research doesn’t have city-by-city detail on them, so it would be guessing to name specifics. The honest approach is to treat South African community size as one input among several when choosing a city rather than the deciding one — and to build local ties through your kids’ school, your workplace and your neighbourhood at the same time, rather than waiting for a ready-made SA community to arrive.
