These Express Entry Categories Require Canadian Work Experience You Won't Have From South Africa
Three of Express Entry’s ten current categories require work experience earned inside Canada, full stop — and if you’ve never worked there, they’re closed to you no matter how strong the rest of your profile looks. Knowing which express entry categories requiring Canadian work experience exist, and which don’t apply to you, saves you from building a strategy around a door that was never open in the first place.
The three categories, and what each one actually asks for
Physicians with Canadian work experience needs at least one year of Canadian work in an eligible role — general practice and family medicine, surgery specialties, or clinical and laboratory medicine — gained within the past three years. It launched in December 2025 as part of a push to boost the domestic doctor supply.
Senior managers with Canadian work experience covers four specific senior-management occupations, again with the qualifying experience earned inside Canada only. Researchers with Canadian work experience is narrower still: two occupations, post-secondary teaching and research assistants, and university professors and lecturers, under the same in-Canada rule. All three either launched or were confirmed as part of the wider category refresh Minister Diab announced in February 2026, alongside a new transport category and a skilled military recruits category built for an entirely different applicant profile.
Why these categories only reward people already in Canada
The logic isn’t hidden. IRCC built these categories to retain people already contributing inside the Canadian system, not to recruit new arrivals from abroad. A senior manager who has run a Canadian team for a year, or a doctor already working under a provincial licence, is exactly the profile these categories exist to keep. None of that helps someone applying from Durban who has never held a Canadian work permit.
Which categories an offshore candidate can actually use
Strike those three off your list, and what remains for someone applying from South Africa is French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, trades, STEM, education, and transport. Of those six, only French, healthcare and social services, and trades have actually produced invitations in 2026 so far — STEM and education still sit on IRCC’s list as eligible categories but haven’t been drawn from this year. That gap between “technically eligible” and “actually being invited” is worth sitting with before you plan around either one.
The honest bottom line
Whatever your CRS score climbs to, these three Canadian-experience-only categories will stay structurally closed to an offshore application — that’s a fixed fact about how they’re built, not something a stronger profile changes. If you want an assessment of which category genuinely fits your own occupation and history, that’s a conversation for a licensed RCIC or immigration lawyer, not a blog post. As a general map of the terrain, though, it holds: three categories are off-limits from South Africa, and six remain live, with half of those actually doing the inviting right now.
