By 8am he’s already at his desk reviewing drawings for a project his team is mid-way through, doing work that, on paper, looks identical to what a certified colleague does. The difference is a designation, not a job description — and how he’s working toward it while already employed is a useful window into engineering technologist C.E.T. certification Canada actually requires, and how much lower-friction it is than the parallel engineer route.
Morning: doing the job without the title yet
Unlike a P.Eng, technologist certification is voluntary in most provinces, which is precisely why he’s sitting at that desk at all — he was hired and is doing real technical work without first holding Certified Engineering Technologist status. That single fact reshapes the whole day: he isn’t waiting on a credential to start earning and contributing, he’s earning the credential while already inside the work.
Midday: logging the hours that actually count
Over lunch he updates a running log of his work experience — a habit that matters more than it sounds like it should. With three or more years of engineering technology education behind him from South Africa, the requirement in front of him is at least two years of qualifying experience before OACETT will consider him for certification. Every project he can document properly now shortens that runway later.
Afternoon: studying for an exam built for people like him
Late afternoon is study time, not for the standard Professional Practice Examination but for its internationally-educated counterpart, the IEPPE — the Internationally Educated Professional Practice Exam. OACETT ASET ASTTBC internationally educated applicant routes all route through some version of this alternate exam, recognising that his path into the profession didn’t start with a Canadian technology diploma.
Early evening: the professional-association question
Before logging off for the day, he checks in on OACETT’s member portal — Ontario’s body for this designation, with ASET in Alberta and ASTTBC in BC running the equivalent function in their own provinces. He joined before certification, not after, specifically to access member resources and start building a paper trail with the organisation that will eventually certify him.
Why this route, and not the P.Eng route
C.E.T. vs P.Eng lower friction landing is the calculation that put him here in the first place. A P.Eng requires 48 months of documented experience, a Competency-Based Assessment, and the National Professional Practice Examination, layered on top of an academic review of his degree. Technologist certification voluntary status in most provinces meant he could be hired, working and paid immediately, with certification running in parallel rather than as a locked gate in front of employment.
What’s still ahead
Once his two years are logged and the IEPPE is behind him, C.E.T. status itself is still a domestic Canadian designation — international portability runs through a separate mobility credential, IntET Canada, for technologists who may eventually want their standing recognised beyond this country. That’s a later-stage question, not today’s.
