The Job-Offer Myth: Why a Canadian Offer No Longer Moves Your CRS Score

Updated 15 August 2026. Ask around any South African expat forum and you will still hear it: "get a job offer and your Express Entry score jumps." It was true once. It has not been true since 25 March 2025, when IRCC removed Comprehensive Ranking System points for arranged employment — and the published 2026 grid confirms the change stands.

What changed

Before 25 March 2025Since 25 March 2025
Qualifying job offer: +50 CRS points (most occupations)0 points
Senior executive offers: +200 CRS points0 points

IRCC announced the suspension as a measure against LMIA fraud — the buying and selling of job offers to harvest points. The published CRS grid on canada.ca no longer awards anything for arranged employment.

What a job offer still does

Removing the points did not make offers worthless — it moved their value out of the score. A genuine offer can still underpin a work permit, and Canadian work experience earns CRS points the ordinary way once it happens. It can also matter inside certain provincial nominee streams, where provinces set their own criteria. What it cannot do anymore is lift a pool score directly — so paying anyone for an "LMIA job offer" buys nothing but risk.

The South African angle

This change cuts both ways for candidates abroad. The shortcut is gone, but so is the advantage held by those who could source offers. The published record shows where 2026 invitations actually flow — French-language, CEC, PNP and category rounds — and none of those doors turns on a job offer's points. Whether any particular door is open to a particular person is regulated advice for licensed practitioners; the grid itself, though, is public, and it says what it says.
