Categories with 2026 rounds in the published record
- French-language proficiency — by far the most active: 5,000-invitation rounds on 9 July (CRS 420), 22 July (399) and 6 August (391), among others earlier in the year.
- Transport Occupations — two versions so far, most recently 300 invitations at 470 on 7 August.
- Senior managers with Canadian experience — 500 invitations at 392 on 10 July.
- Skilled Military Recruits — a first-ever round on 23 July: 4 invitations at 368, the smallest draw in Express Entry history.
The pattern in who gets drawn
The active categories share a feature: each maps to an explicit, published policy goal — francophone targets in the levels plan, transport-sector shortages, defence recruitment. Categories built around broad occupation lists move to their own irregular rhythm; some sit dormant for months and then produce a round without warning. Why dormancy matters as much as draws
A category existing is not a category drawing. A candidate whose occupation appears on a published list is in a different practical position depending on whether that category has produced rounds — and the published record is the only place that difference shows. This is also where careful reading beats headlines: news coverage tends to report each category announcement once, in the spring, while the draw record quietly determines which announcements turned into invitations.
