Legalisation, not just the certificate itself

Getting the unabridged certificate isn’t the end of the process — it then needs formal legalisation through DIRCO’s Legalisation Section before Canada will treat it as valid. Exactly which legalisation route applies (South Africa’s system has been in some flux on this point) is worth confirming directly with DIRCO or a document-legalisation professional rather than assuming last year’s process still holds. Budget the DIRCO step as its own separate stretch of time, layered on top of the wait for the certificate.

Passport and photos

A valid passport with enough validity remaining is the baseline everything else attaches to. Keep a couple of spare certified copies on hand — Home Affairs and DIRCO both tend to want originals or certified copies at different stages, and reordering mid-process is its own delay.

Police clearance, if it applies to you

Any family member aged 18 or older is generally the one who needs a police certificate on file, covering any country where they lived six months or longer in a row over the past decade — time under 18, and time already spent in Canada, doesn’t count toward this. Where a current-country certificate is required, it typically has to be recent, issued within roughly six months of when you submit. If a South African Police Service clearance applies to your spouse’s file, start that request early; SAPS turnaround has historically run behind the pace an application might expect of it.

Proof of relationship, beyond the certificate

What proof of relationship a spouse’s application requires usually goes beyond the certificate itself — think supporting evidence of a genuine, ongoing relationship where that’s asked for. Keep the paper trail: joint accounts, shared leases, photos with dates, correspondence. None of it replaces the marriage certificate; all of it can matter if an officer wants more than the certificate alone.
