The Six Express Entry Categories Still Open If You Have Never Worked in Canada
A qualified applicant in Cape Town, who has never held a Canadian work permit, sits down to work out which of Express Entry’s ten current categories could actually reach her. Four are closed before she even starts checking occupation lists — they require Canadian work experience she doesn’t have. The express entry categories open to applicants outside Canada are the other six, and this checklist runs through exactly which ones, and how real each one currently is.
1. French-language proficiency
No occupation requirement at all — the entire eligibility test is language ability, NCLC 7 across all four abilities. This is the single most accessible category on the list for someone with no Canadian ties, and it has drawn repeatedly through 2026 at cut-offs consistently below Canadian Experience Class levels.
2. Healthcare and social services
The broadest occupation list of any category, at 37 occupations, with experience allowed to have been gained in Canada or abroad. It requires the standard 12 months of qualifying work within the past three years, and has drawn multiple times in 2026.
3. Trades occupations
25 occupations, again experience in Canada or abroad, again 12 months within three years. Trades has also drawn repeatedly in 2026, alongside French and healthcare, making these three the categories with an actual, current invitation record behind them.
4. STEM occupations
11 occupations, in Canada or abroad. Genuinely eligible, but no round has been held under this category in 2025 or 2026 to date — its last invitations went out in April 2024.
5. Education occupations
5 occupations, in Canada or abroad. This one drew twice in 2025 before going quiet, with nothing so far in 2026.
6. Transport occupations
4 occupations — but a completely different list from the trucking-heavy version that ran in 2023–24. The current list covers air pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors, automotive service technicians, and aircraft mechanics and inspectors, in Canada or abroad. No round has been held under this new list yet.
Which express entry categories don’t need Canadian experience — the honest ranking
All six of these accept experience gained outside Canada, or, for French, carry no occupation-based experience requirement at all. That’s what separates them from physicians, senior managers, researchers and skilled military recruits — all four of which require Canadian-based experience or, in the military case, an existing arrangement with the Canadian Forces. But eligible and active aren’t the same thing: of these six, only French, healthcare and social services, and trades have actually produced rounds in 2026.

That’s the honest state of play heading into the rest of 2026 for anyone applying from outside Canada: six categories exist that don’t require you to have already worked here, and only three of them are currently inviting anyone. Check your own occupation and language ability against those three first, and treat STEM, education and the new transport list as categories worth watching rather than planning around today.
