Which of Express Entry's Ten 2026 Categories Are Open to Offshore Applicants

Ten categories exist in Express Entry today. Three are closed to you if you’ve never worked in Canada, no matter how strong your profile otherwise is. Here’s a category-by-category walkthrough of exactly where the express entry categories open to offshore applicants actually sit for someone applying from home.

The three closed doors

Physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, and researchers with Canadian work experience all share one absolute rule: the qualifying year of experience must have been earned inside Canada. There is no offshore path into any of these three, regardless of how senior, specialised, or well-documented the equivalent foreign experience is.

Which express entry categories need canadian experience specifically, as an absolute requirement? Exactly these three.

The six categories actually open to offshore applicants

The six categories offshore applicants can actually use are built around either no work-experience requirement at all, or experience that can be earned in Canada or abroad:

  1. French-language proficiency — no work-experience requirement at all. Just NCLC 7 across all four abilities: reading, writing, speaking, listening.
  2. Healthcare and social services — 37 occupations, experience accepted from Canada or abroad.
  3. Trade occupations — 25 occupations, Canada or abroad.
  4. STEM occupations — 11 occupations, Canada or abroad.
  5. Education occupations — 5 occupations, Canada or abroad.
  6. Transport occupations, 2026 list — 4 occupations (pilots, flight engineers, automotive technicians, aircraft mechanics and inspectors), Canada or abroad.

These are the categories a south african can qualify for from abroad, provided the underlying occupation and, where relevant, the 12-month experience threshold are actually met.

Eligible on paper isn’t the same as actively drawing

Of those six, only three have actually issued invitations in 2026: French-language proficiency, repeatedly, at cut-offs from 393 to 420; healthcare and social services, at cut-offs of 467–475; and trades, at CRS 477. STEM has had no draw since 2024. Education’s last round was 1 May 2025, with nothing recorded in 2026 to date. The new transport list, announced 18 February 2026, had recorded no draw at all as of the most recent published data.

What about skilled military recruits?

The tenth category, skilled military recruits, isn’t really an offshore civilian route at all — it’s built for serving members of a recognised foreign military with an arranged employment offer from the Canadian Forces Recruiting Group, a narrow and specific case rather than a general opening for South African applicants.

Express entry category eligibility while living overseas, in short

Express entry category eligibility while living overseas comes down to picking from six real doors, checking the specific occupation list for each one against your own NOC code, and being honest about which of those doors have actually drawn recently versus which remain open on paper only.

Which of these six actually fits your situation is a question for a licensed RCIC or Canadian immigration lawyer, not a general walkthrough like this one. What the record does confirm is that “offshore” and “shut out” are not the same thing — six real doors remain, even if only half of them are currently swinging open.
