None of it requires specialist knowledge, but unfamiliarity can slow you down in a test where timing matters.
Does this disadvantage someone who’s never set foot in Canada? It adds friction more than it blocks access. The test isn’t designed as a trivia check on Canadian facts, but processing speed drops when you’re working out an unfamiliar reference at the same time as answering the actual language question. Someone who has lived in Canada for a year picks up this context by osmosis — a passing headline, an office conversation, a school newsletter. Someone testing from Johannesburg has to build the same familiarity on purpose, which takes a little planning but is entirely doable.

Canada uses the metric system and writes dates in formats that can differ from South African convention depending on context — worth a quick refresh if metric units and Canadian date formats aren’t second nature to you, so you’re not doing mental conversion mid-passage.
Are there seasonal references that might trip up someone who’s never experienced a Canadian year? Passages referencing winter routines or weather-related scenarios are plausible content given how central seasons are to Canadian daily life. If you’ve genuinely never experienced a Canadian winter, this is worth reading about beforehand rather than encountering cold, so the content itself doesn’t cost you time you need for the language task.
What’s realistic never-been-to-Canada CELPIP prep for someone with limited time? None of this changes what CELPIP is testing — your English. It changes how much of your test-taking energy goes to language versus unfamiliar context.
