Is there a best time of year to enter the Express Entry pool, or does the month you enter the pool matter at all? Your Comprehensive Ranking System score is what gets you an invitation, and that score doesn’t care what the calendar says. But the pattern of the last few years does tell you something real about timing — just not the thing most forum threads assume.

The February pattern

Start with the question everyone opens with: are there more draws early in the year? There’s a real pattern here, but it’s about category announcements, not draw volume. IRCC has announced its new priority categories for Express Entry in February for the last two years running — 27 February 2025 and 18 February 2026. The first six to eight weeks of a calendar year are often quieter for category-specific draws simply because the categories haven’t been confirmed yet, and activity picks up once they are.

That’s a scheduling quirk of how IRCC runs the programme. It’s a poor reason to delay creating your profile — your profile has to exist before you can receive any invitation, whichever category ends up drawing.

Waiting for the levels plan

The answer is no, and the opposite is the most damaging piece of “smart” advice circulating. The federal levels plan, which sets overall admission targets, is tabled in the autumn (5 November 2025 for the 2026–2028 plan) and shapes the following year’s Express Entry allocation. Waiting for it to land before entering the pool costs you months of eligibility with no offsetting benefit. The plan affects how many people get invited across the year as a whole. It says nothing about whether your individual profile is competitive on the day it’s created.

What happens in December

Then there’s the seasonal version of the question: do draws pause over the Canadian holidays? There’s no confirmed pattern of holiday-specific pauses in the draw record we checked, and drawing that conclusion from a handful of quiet December weeks is the kind of thing that gets repeated as fact without anyone actually checking it. What is true: both 2025 and 2026 opened with the first draws of the year in early January — 7 January 2025, 5 January 2026 — so the programme doesn’t take an extended new-year break.

What actually moves the needle

Underneath all the others sits one question: does pool timing beat profile quality? It doesn’t. 2025 saw 58 rounds and 113,998 invitations, all through category-based, Canadian Experience Class and provincial nomination draws — there hasn’t been a general, all-program draw since 23 April 2024. A strong CRS score, or a real match to one of the active categories, does more for your chances than any month you pick to submit a profile.

So what should you actually do? Create your profile as soon as your documents and language test results are ready, whatever month it is. Put your energy instead into the things that genuinely move your score — a stronger language result, an additional year of qualifying work experience, or a provincial nomination, which currently carries a substantial CRS bonus and is often the difference between a competitive profile and one that sits in the pool untouched.
