Anatomy of a Canada Visitor Visa Application Process for South Africans
A friend books flights to Canada three weeks out, then messages asking whether South Africans “still need that eTA thing.” They don’t have one available to them at all — and finding that out three weeks before departure, instead of three months before, is how the Canada visitor visa application process for South Africans turns into a scramble.
Start here: it’s a visa, not an eTA
South Africa sits on IRCC’s visa-required countries list, with no footnote offering an eTA alternative. Some other middle-income countries were added to an expanded eTA programme in recent years, and that’s likely where the confusion comes from — but South Africa isn’t among the 17 countries on that expanded list. Every mode of travel needs the visitor visa: flying, driving, arriving by train, bus or boat.
Online, or at a VFS centre
Applications go through IRCC’s online system, or a paper application in specific circumstances IRCC defines. In South Africa, VFS Global runs the Visa Application Centres that handle biometrics and document submission on IRCC’s behalf — reported centres include Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha, though which of these specifically process Canada applications is worth confirming directly with VFS before you plan around a specific city. VACs collect fingerprints and a photo and handle your passport, but they don’t decide on the application — that’s IRCC.
What it costs
So how much is a Canada visitor visa in rand? The fee is $100 CAD per person, or up to $500 CAD as a family maximum for five or more applying together. Biometrics run separately: $85 CAD per individual, or $170 CAD capped per family of two or more. In rand terms that’s a moving target given exchange rates — treat any conversion as illustrative only and check the current rate before budgeting.
What you have to submit
The answer to what forms are in a Canada visitor visa application starts with a completed application form, a valid passport, proof of funds to support the trip, and evidence of ties that would bring you back to South Africa — employment, property, family. Biometrics are required in most cases. Beyond that, the specific document list varies by individual circumstances, so read the requirements for your own application type rather than copying a friend’s list.
How long it takes
Processing times move constantly, and IRCC publishes a live tool rather than a fixed figure — treat any processing-time number you read, including one from a few months ago, as already possibly out of date. Build in a real buffer before booking flights; a refusal or a slower-than-expected processing time doesn’t refund a non-refundable ticket.
What a first study or work permit changes
If you’re travelling on a first study or work permit rather than purely as a visitor, IRCC issues the visa automatically alongside permit approval, and you travel with the letter of introduction and the passport carrying that visa. That’s a real simplification for anyone moving under a permit, worth knowing before you assume you need two separate applications.
The one thing worth doing before anything else
Use IRCC’s own “find out what you need to enter Canada” tool before booking anything. Rules and eligible-passport lists shift, and a dual national — someone holding, say, a UK or EU passport alongside a South African one — may have a faster path available on the other passport.
